Up until his untimely death in 1997, Michael Hedges, Grammy - nominee and one of Windham Hill's most pioneering artists, was described as an inventor, an entertainer, a revolutionary, and a singer/songwriter/performer whose spirit was boundless and whose fingerstyle guitar playing was nothing short of astonishing. His distinctive style of playing, wittily self-described as "heavy mental" or "new edge", grounded Hedges' reputation in the contemporary music world as truly innovative. Were it not for the visually documented records of his flamboyant live performances and impossibly complicated finger techniques, one could easily assume that, when listening to his music, more than one guitar performer must be responsible for such sophisticated songs.
