Of Navajo-Ute
heritage, R. Carlos Nakai is the world's premier performer
of the Native American flute. Originally trained in
Classical trumpet and music theory, Nakai was given a
traditional cedar wood flute as a gift and challenged to see
what he could do with it. His first album, Changes, was
released in 1983 and since then he released over 30 albums.
In additional to his solo appearances throughout the United
States, Europe and Japan, Nakai has worked with guitarist
William Eaton, flutist Paul Horn, Tibetan flutist Nawang
Khechog and various symphonic orchestras. He found the
ethnic jazz ensemble, the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet. He has
been nominated four times for a Grammy award in 1994, 2000
(two categories) and in 2001. Nakai sees his role as a
performer of the traditional flute not to reiterate the
traditional sounds but to find new avenues of expression for
the the traditional and contemporary native cultures of
America.
AmoChip Dabney has developed a mastery of many styles in his
thirty plus years of performing. Of African, Native American
and European descent, Amo (pronounces "ah-moe") has not only
sought to understand those cultures but also incorporates
this interest into improvisation through performance. He
studied saxophone, bass, piano and composition at the Newark
School for the Performing Arts and has worked with Sun Ra
and his Omniverse Arkestra, O.J. Ekemoe and the Nigerian
All-Stars and Zydeco's Queen Ida. He has appeared on over
twenty albums and has released two albums of original
compositions, So Many Ways and Escape from Newark on his own
label, "Microchip".
Critics have
dubbed Will Clipman a "renaissance man," "percussionist
extraordinaire," "master improvisor/musical collaborator,"
"jack-of-all-arts," and "the perfect partner”. He has
recorded over fifty albums with various artists, including
sixteen for Canyon Records, where he is regarded as the
house percussionist. Outside of musical circles, Will is
also known as a poet, maskmaker, storyteller, and
interdisciplinary performing artist. His solo show, Global
Village Musical Story Theater, combines his original masks
and mythopoetic storytelling with creative movement and
indigenous world music. |
