One can only imagine how many
young people have been inspired by seeing classical flutist James Galway in
performance ….
Nicholas Gunn is in that number.
And what inspiration it has been! From an early age in his Rochester,
England home, music was on his mind. Fascinated by his Grandfather who was a
professional pedal steel guitarist, he made a youthful decision to play the
flute after seeing Galway on television. Lessons with Mick Judson, a member
of the Royal Marines Band led Gunn to enroll in Royal School of Music, where
Judson was an instructor. When Nicholas’ family moved to Southern California
in his teen years, he played flute in school concert bands and wind
ensembles, but also learned to play drums and percussion in the marching
bands. “It’s interesting now to look back at that early musical training and
see how it came to serve me well in my recording career. By learning two of
music’s basic elements, --- rhythm through percussion and melody through
flute-- it gave me a solid foundation for creating the sounds on my albums,”
Gunn explains.
Gunn’s latest project on his
label, Gemini Sun, is a stunning collaboration with Nature Photographer,
Michael Fatali. “Beyond Grand Canyon” is a journey through music and images,
a unique audio-visual CD/DVD experience infusing the haunting and powerful
sounds of Gunn’s nature-inspired compositions with Fatali’s twenty-five year
odyssey of stunning imagery of the Southwest’s phenomenal beauty. Their
synergistic, creative passion shines through, taking you on a journey far
away, into distant spaces and sounds. “Beyond Grand Canyon” is a “must have”
for all who appreciate nature, music and art. |
