CLINTON DENNY
About the Artist
For seventy-five years, three generations of the Denny family have served critical roles in the establishment and development of the peyote rite on the Rocky Boy (Chippewa-Cree) Reservation in Montana.
In 1932, Clinton’s grandfather, William Denny, Sr., brought the Native American Church (NAC) to the Rocky Boy Reservation in Crow, Montana. During this time, Clinton’s grandparents raised eleven children (including William Jr.), all who would go on to participate in the NAC in some way.
Clinton Denny was born in 1965 in Havre, Montana, and was involved in the NAC from the very beginning. His mother Roberta, was also involved the NAC and he began singing with his father at the age of four. He learned to tie the drum at seven, drumming for and singing with his father, as well as traveling with him to various conferences.
Clinton learned to seek cross-cultural connections by learning the songs of different tribes, and respecting the ways of different people. He also learned the prayers for the blessing of the home, family, grandchildren, and livelihood. Clinton continues to perform at NAC ceremonies and sweat lodges.
