JUDY TREJO
About the Artist
Judy Trejo was a singer, songmaker, linguist, storyteller, herbalist and teacher. She was a member of the Walker River Paiutes and was born in Alturas, California. Judy had one son, five daughters and numerous grandchildren. A retired elementary school teacher with a master's degree in counseling, Judy taught Paiute at the college level and published a booklet on medicinal and edible plants. She always sang circle dance and stick game songs and was a member of the Native American Church. Asked how old she is, Judy liked to reply that she is 'kissing sixty.' Judy's recording 'Circle Dance Songs of the Paiute and Shoshone,' recieved the 1997 AFIM Indie Award for Best Native American Album and 'Stick Game Songs of the Paiute' won a NAMMY in 2000 for Best Historical Recording.
Sadly, Judy passed away in 2002, her talent and wealth of knowledge is sorely missed.
